Simon Engler
Eva Number:
2/15
Eva Date:
01/16/2013
Time Slot:
earlyPM
Purpose:
The EVA crew consisted of Simon Engler, EVA team leader, Sian Proctor,
navigator & stenographer, and Yajaira Sierra-Sastre, scientist. The
second excursion of Crew 122’s MDRS mission, this pedestrian EVA was
similar to the first EVA with the additon of two waypoints to collect
strata samples. This EVA consisted of objectives for each EVA member.
In addition, this was intended to be an EVA to test out the equipment
and protocols for an EVA, getting members used to the space suits and
using various equipment with the EVA suits. Simon Engler intended to
test out the clearpath Husky robot by using it as a sample transport.
Sian Proctor who is the public outreach officer for our upcoming
mission wanted to document and film as much as possible, figuring out
how to do this properly in the EVA suit. Crew member Yajaira
Sierra-Sastre hoped to gather dirt at different levels of strata for
biological analysis.
Narrative:
Upon exiting the airlock at 13:54, crew member Simon Engler began
using the Clearpath Husky robotic platform in the area imediately in
front of the habitat. Operating the robot with a wireless hand
controller, Simon Engler field tested the robot acting as a sample
collector, where the robot would accompany the EVA member from one
location to the next, for the purpose of taking on new materials.
During this time Sian Proctor filmed and photographed the experiment
with the assistance of Yajaira Sierra-Sastre. After working for
several minutes, a button on the controller became jammed, and
connection to the robotic platform was lost. The EVA team then
departed, leaving the robot behind, for WP1 at 14:08. The walk to WP1
involved a lot of exploration of the immediate area and discussion
about space suit. Arriving at WP1 at 14:18, the Brain Rock formation
was examined. WP1 was departed at 14:20, with an arrival at WP2 at
14:34. The EVA team took time to investigate the Petrified wood in the
area, and take photos. Additionally, the EVA team climbed up a small
hill in the immediate area and got a breathtaking view of the
surrounding area. The EVA team then departed for WP3 at 14:46, and
found an area with exposed strata. Upon arriving at WP3 it was
realized that the area around WP2 also has a lot of exposed strata,
which would have made a superior place to collect samples. This should
be noted for future EVA missions. A sample was collected at 14:48 and
the EVA team headed for WP4 at 14:56. Enroute to WP4, a small stream
was spotted which was of interest to the EVA Scientist. A sample of
mud from the stream was collected at 14:58. Continuing onward, the EVA
team arrived at WP4 at 15:03. On a nearby here, there was a lot of
exposed strata which the EVA Scientist indicated was a good area to
collect samples. Samples from three different layers of strata, of
strikingly different colors were collected. Upon completion of this
task, the EVA team departed WP4 for MDRS at 15:22. Upon returning to
MDRS, the robot was collected and placed in the airlock. The EVA team
entered the airlock at 15:37 ending a very successful mission.
