EVA 3
(Note: Names of features used in this report are crew specific)
10:40 – 12:35 MT (5 minute decompression / recompression in airlock)
Crew Members: Paula Crock (XO, Suit 2), Lisa Stewart (Scientist, Suit 4), Dan Wilcox (Journalist, Suit 3)
Site Location: Road from the Hab north past The Gateway (518432 4249595)
Transit Mode: Walking/ATV
Objectives: Roadbed survey and recording waypoints of interesting geological points of interest for future EVAs
Summary/Results: We took a slow EVA via ATV to Gateway got crew comfortable with ATV usage. XO’s radio lost signal to Hab before Gateway and was not able to contact at Gateway either but Journalist’s radio was able to contact Hab at Gateway. We found that signal is significantly better part way up the hills of Gateway. We surveyed the geology on the near side of Gateway then rode to the far side to survey geology there. All radios were unable to contact Hab on the far side of Gateway. Due to time constraint and inability to contact Hab, EVA team returned to Hab instead of completing intended half-loop to meeting point with afternoon EVA.
Lessons Learned:
1. Crew familiarity with ATVs
2. Some radios do not work particularly well
3. Rear view mirrors would be useful
4. Radio signal is significantly improved on the near side of Gateway by climbing part way up the hills
5. Slight film of dish soap on inside of mask largely prevents fogging
