Today was quite a productive one!
We begun the day with two simultaneous pedestrian EVA's to the north.
One was destined to the
collection of data for the stream bed project while the second was for
simulation purposes.
The two teams left the hab together and walked to the survey area.
One stayed on site to collect the needed data on the secondary stream
beds to compare the incoming
flows with the variations from the main one.
The second team went further to the north to test the average walking
speed during long pedestrian
EVA's on an unknown field. Their second objective was to test the
maximal distance we could expect
to reach with the limitation on oxygen reserves we imposed on ourselves.
The communication with the Hab was difficult in the area because of
the relief as we discovered
yesterday so the first team was to be an intermediate contact between
the first one and the Hab.
Regular checks where done to be ready in case of an emergency.
Trash was found laying around on the way back to the Hab and the EVA
teams decided to take it back
to the Hab as we already did yesterday to clean up "analog Mars" from
traces of human activities.
We intend to do the same during the next EVA's as long as it doesn't
intervene with the simulation
or our missions.
The two last crew members stayed at the Hab to serve as support for
the EVA's and check on our
positions and oxygen left, while working on their projects.
In the afternoon, two crew members took the Hab car to go to
Hanksville to pick up the missing food
supplies and the astronomer's laptop. Following DG's advice, they
filled up the Hab car tank that
was quite low (<1/4)and had limited autonomy left. Which could have
been dangerous in case of an
emergency.
The others analysed the data that was collected yesterday during the
EVA's and worked on the model
for the stream bed.
