Today marks our first full day in simulation! Crew 130 had a very packed and productive day on Mars. Our day started off right as the crew was awaken at 8am Mars time to a wonderful wake up song sung by our own mission director, Kyle Yawn titled "Your on Mars" by Kyle Yawn. After a short morning brief, individual crew members had a two hour time block to work on assigned tasks. Shelby won over the crew's hearts by baking fresh bread. Shannon, Schumann, Doug and Shelby prepared for our terrain scouting mission by designing a mount to protect the camera we mounted on a kite. Steffan set up our Ham radios so we would have communication for our afternoon EVA. I worked on outlining our mission objectives for Mission Support and set up our 3d printer.
This afternoon was an exciting time for Crew 130 as we took our first steps on Mars! The crew was all very surprised by the performance of our $5 Spider-man kite as an extremely effective terrain mapping device. We were able to collect several high definition photographs of the terrain surrounding the Hab. We hope that these images will help us to target areas for future EVAs and help us to make the most of our EVA time. We were impressed with the high quality images and are looking forward to more terrain mapping EVAs in the future.
