The Kingdom of Tekar lies north of the Red Orc Dominion, which edges closer to the Kingdom's outer counties every year. The Tekarians do not look upon this with fear. Quite the opposite, in fact, for they are a harsh and unforgiving people who train for combat all their lives. To them, it is a religious calling, the gods of the Kingdom long ago having decreed that so long as every Terkarian was a warrior, the Kingdom will never be brought low. To that end every Takarian is assigned a military unit at birth and based on the year in which they were born, and from age three until death they train with that unit every other day, working when they aren't training. Units are rotated and cross trained so that there are always men and women able to work the fields, forges, quarries, and workshops. The only exception are those who are chosen to train as mages - they are considered the elite among the Tekarian military, and their training precludes any other concern except war. Every unit is expected to complete one campaign within the first sixteen years after it is founded. Typically these first campaigns are relatively simple matters, such as clearing out a goblin nest or hunting down a band of caravan raiders, but they serve as a very important test as well as a chance to solidify the unit with ties of shared blood. Beyond their military service, Takarians are also expected to excel at at least one task essential for the support of the Kingdom, be it animal husbandry, blacksmithing, or even research. Failure, and even momentary weakness, are punished harshly and most often by death or exile. While this may seem extreme, it has allowed Tekar to become one of the oldest, if not largest or most powerful, kingdoms in the world, and it is often the rock upon which the armies of those greater kingdoms have broken.
