- The queen is a man. (Note: Apparently the word "pieces" doesn't always exclude pawns, even in "proper" chess terminology. My mistake.)

There are three possibilites of explaining the gender "issue" of a pawn promoting into a queen. The first one is that the pawn changes gender if it promotes to a queen. The second one is that the queen is a man, which is supported by the terminology. The third one is that the pawn is a woman, which also means all pieces except the king are female as the pawn can also promote into a knight, bishop or rook.

Happy May 17! Today is the 200-year jubilee of the Norwegian Constitution, signed at Eidsvoll on May 17, 1814. It is also the birthday of my cat. Happy birthday, Norway and Mozart! :D
