Peter Montgomery: A halo is an optical phenomenon caused by light passing through ice crystals in the atmosphere.
Peter Montgomery: The crystals are often found in cirrus or cirrostratus clouds five to ten kilometers about the ground.
Peter Montgomery: Because these clouds often signify an approaching frontal system, a halo often mean rain will fall within the next twenty-four hours.
