On example of this imagery that I am referring to is very common with people who are suffering from a phobia, for example. If you have a phobia of a spider then very clearly it's not the external image of the spider that you see through your eyes that causes the panic anxiety, but the internal image that the mind creates when it sees that spider.

The nature of this imagery is almost certainly going to be very large, very vivid in color and probably very close, and it's those features of the internal imagery that actually create the anxiety.

During online therapy sessions we will explore the internal imagery of your emotions and we will change that imagery through creative imagination.

The imagery simply arises out of habit, but habits can be changed. When you bring conscious awareness to examine that imagery, that brings with it some choice, and that allows you to change the imagery of your emotions. When you change that imagery the emotions change. It's really as simple as that.

The very process of observing your emotions actually helps you break free from your emotions because you establish a conscious relationship and habits work unconsciously, they depend on you not forming a conscious relationship with your emotions.

Welcome. My name is Peter Strong. I'm a professional psychotherapist specializing in the treatment of anxiety and depression and also addictions using mindfulness therapy. All my therapy sessions are via Skype and sometimes Zoom. It's very important that you use Skype or Zoom or FaceTime so that you can see each other. If you can see each other then the communication will be much better and is really just as good as meeting a therapist in person, especially if you are interested in an approach like Mindfulness Therapy that's focused on teaching you practical ways of working with your anxiety and depression or other emotional conditions yourself. 

This is the focus of Mindfulness Therapy. It Is about empowering you, giving you the tools to work with difficult emotions that need healing, and I will teach you during our online therapy sessions how to use mindfulness to promote healing of anxiety, depression and other forms of emotional suffering. 

So the mindfulness approach is really one of building conscious attention around the emotions that are bothering you. It's about turning towards your anxiety or depression rather than trying to run away from them. The avoidance reactions are quite natural and common, but unfortunately if you avoid the emotional pain it cannot heal. So since our mission is to heal anxiety or depression we must generate more conscious awareness around the emotions that are in pain. 

We effectively see those emotions as being what they really are, which is mental objects. They are habits that get triggered and appear in the mind when they are triggered as mental objects. We learn to relate to them in that way as mental objects instead of becoming identified with them. 

So we do this by meditating on our emotions. We place them as the primary objects of meditation so they become an object of meditation. And this reinforces our freedom from reactive identification with those emotions. If you are able to observe them then that position of being the observer is free from the emotion, is not conditioned by it.

Whether that's anxiety or depression or anything else it's habitual in nature. It becomes established as a conditioned habit. So our first job is to see that habit clearly and restore consciousness to it because habits cannot thrive when they are illuminated by conscious awareness.

The second approach that we cultivate when we meditate on our emotions is the response of compassion. So this is taught in a very specific way in the Mindfulness Therapy system that I have developed over the years. This is a process whereby we develop compassion towards that specific emotion itself as an object. 

It's rather like the relationship between a parent and a child. You can think of the emotional object as being like a child. It's conditioned. It has a limited consciousness and it's not very good at healing its own pain. It requires a parent to help in that healing. 

One of the primary methods that we employ for healing emotion, besides establishing this relationship as parent and child, which is of course very healing in itself, is by developing awareness of the imagery that is behind the emotion.

So seeing that imagery is very important because once you see it consciously then you can help it change. When the imagery changes the emotion changes and this actually is the primary mechanism through which emotions heal naturally. In our mindfulness work we are simply speed up this natural healing process.

This is a style of psychotherapy that I have been teaching for well over ten years now and that I find to be extremely effective for producing healing for anxiety and depression and also for other common emotional problems like driving anxiety, OCD, and also I've had a lot of success with working with people suffering from PTSD and emotional trauma. 

The basic concept behind Mindfulness Therapy is not so much just talking about your emotional problems but rather looking in detail at the structure of your emotions and also the relationship that you have with your emotions. These are the two major areas we work on during mindfulness therapy sessions. 

We look at the structure and the structure of your anxiety or depression or other form of emotional suffering is very much maintained by a network of habitual reactive thoughts and beliefs as well. These are habitual, they tend to just operate automatically without our choice. They simply feed the anxiety or depression underneath. 

So examining that network of reactive thinking is quite essential. And with mindfulness we begin to quite quickly break free from the habitual unconscious aspects of this structure of habitual reactive thinking. 

Once you see those thoughts very clearly you can begin to exercise choice and decide not to pursue those reactive thoughts and not to identify with. 

You can also learn how to work with the underlying emotion that is feeding those reactive thoughts, the underlying anxiety and depression itself. So this is where we build a relationship with our emotions based on mindfulness, and that means based on compassion. 

We learn to see those emotions as being objects that are in pain themselves. Strictly speaking from a mindfulness or Buddhist perspective, it's not you that is suffering it is the emotions themselves. You see these as objects in the mind that are like small fires that ignite and create suffering. 

Our job is to change our relationship to these objects so that we can help them heal rather than simply proliferate the suffering through reactive thinking. 

So we develop a compassionate relationship with any part of ourselves that is in pain, any emotion that is in a state of suffering. You learn to treat it with kindness, with friendliness and compassion. These are tremendously powerful healing forces. Trying to get rid of painful emotions is a very weak approach that is generally if not always totally ineffective. You have to develop a conscious friendly relationship with your emotions. That is what creates the right conditions for healing. 

It takes some training to do this effectively but it's not that difficult. And most people see quite dramatic changes even within the first two to three sessions once they start changing the way they relate to their emotions. Once you start relating to your emotions with mindfulness they will start to change quite rapidly. 

We can help that change process. When the emotions are operating habitually in an unconscious state of conditioned reactivity they can change. They can only repeat themselves over and over again. But once you break that unconscious habitual aspect by bringing mindful consciousness to them then they are able to change and heal quite quickly.
