With some new members joining us we had a breif introdution. Then we ventured into the Shallow Lake Badlands for a truly unique hike, one that takes you across the lake's bottom. Due to the mining of marl years ago, the lake follows a seasonal cycle of filling and draining, which creates an intriguing landscape. Birds are attracted to the concentrated aquatic life in the shrinking ponds. It was a great chance to hone our identification skills as we saw Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs, Least and Semipalmated Sandpipers, Black-bellied and Golden Plovers side by side. A highlight and unexpected burst of excitement happened while watching a mob of crows, a Cooper's Hawk suddenly appeared, hotly pursued by a Goshawk.
Lynn kindly invited everyone to lunch on her deck, where we could enjoy the beauty of her property. We began the afternoon by spotting the first Bonaparte's Gulls of the season at North Oliphant. Seven Sanderlings were observed darting along the high-water mark, weaving between beachgoers on Sauble Beach. An out-of-season Canvasback was seen at the Sauble River mouth. Following is a complete list of birds seen, but for a more detailed breakdown of the checklists visit the Trip Report at https://ebird.org/tripreport/272786?view=checklists
