Doug Pedwell led this outing starting on the groomed trails at the Sauble Beach Community Center. A boardwalk to Carson Lake revealed a lake slowly filling with plant debris. it is a bog in the making. Bogs are incredibly slow to develop, taking hundreds of years to form. As the lake accumulates more debris, sphagnum moss and other specialty plants begin to grow, eventually covering the entire surface. One unique bog plant the Winterberry was in its full glory today. Winterberry is a native holly with showy red berries that birds will eat. White-crowned and White-throated sparrows were both spotted at this stop. At the mouth of the Sauble River we saw several Bald Eagles perched in the treetops. We puzzled over some distant swans until we heard them trumpet. Next we drove the Huron Lake shoreline north to Oliphant. The only shorebirds we saw were Greater Yellowlegs. A red fox at Lonely Island causeway grabbed our attention as it trotted up the road and hunted in the marsh grasses. We had lunch at Berford Lake and then moved on to Isaac Lake where we had close up views of Trumpeter Swans. We finished the day at the Wiarton Lagoons with a couple of Coots and a nice selection of ducks.
Thanks so much to Doug for leading today and Marilyn Ohler for keeping the eBird list. Following is a complete list of the birds seen. Cheers James
