Relaxing at Marshalls
On Wednesday June 5, twelve members of the Bruce Birding Club led by Marshall Byle Marwanda plus. Marshall had his scope fixed on a Cooper’s Hawk nest that was near impossible to locate with binoculars. A 5 km hike through field and forest proved most migrants had passed just the summer residents now. A Green Heron posed in a tree for good observation. Indigo Buntings, Overbirds and Scarlett Tanager‘s were heard in the mature forest. Marshall had to leave but gave us exact directions to a Red-headed Woodpecker nest and we were delighted from the moment we arrived. The Red-headed climbed to the top of its nesting tree and then even better flew down lower for great views. At Inverhuron Lagoons we hiked a road through a rejuvenating young forest where there was plenty of cuckoo food in the form of tent caterpillars. Only a single Black-billed Cuckoo was seen by the last car at a glance as it crossed the road. Cedar Waxwings cooperated perching close up. Some of the group carried on to the JI line were Grasshopper and Clay-colored Sparrows were observed. Thanks so much to everybody for coming out, Marshall for leading and Marilyn for keeping the day's eBird checklist. A total of 53 birds were recorded.
