Hi Everyone,
Thank you to Eric and his partner Steve who led the hike for us at the Mitchell Lagoons (West Perth Wetlands). They have an outstanding knowledge of the birds that visit this prime area for shorebirds. They also share their knowledge freely and for that we thank them again. Eric and Steve had the lagoons well scouted before we arrived. We had 28 people who came to see the display of birds waiting for us. 42 species of birds were seen on the day.
Mitchell has proven to be a consistent and reliable stop for shorebirds. We saw 11 species on Wednesday. The Least and Semipalmated Sandpipers did their best to confuse us, but I think we solved the riddle they provided us. The regular shorebirds yet to come to Mitchell are Long-billed and Short-billed Dowitcher, White-rumped Sandpiper, Black and American Golden Plover, the phalaropes, Dunlin and Sanderling.
The birds that seemed to get the most attention on the day were the Stilt Sandpiper, a few Green Herons who seemed to be seeking our attention as we traversed the lagoons, and 4 Great Egrets who put on a fine, flying display for us. The most common shorebirds on the day were the Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs. Lunch was at Lions Park in Mitchell.
The weather was about 23 C. with cloudy skies. The winds were light.
Take care.
Fred
