Part of the crew at Wiarton
The heat warning issued for the day contributed to the smaller turnout. On June 19th 2024, 13 members of the BBC visited the Bruce Peninsula. Starting at Isaac Lake a diversity of conspicuous birds greeted us. Hooded Mergansers and Canada Geese were tending to young' while Great Egrets and Green Herons shifted perches in dead trees. A loud rattling Marsh Wren was only seen in glimpses through the waving swamp grasses. Caspian and Black Terns did plunge dives close up and Common Terns were seen at a distance. At Skye Lake some roadside feathers turned into a Birder Murder Mystery that was solved to be a Ruffed Grouse. The cool breeze at Oliphant marina was a welcome treat. Barbara guided us at the Oliphant Fen and identified the many flower species in blossom. At Petrel Point we were enjoying the spectacular Showy Lady Slippers when a bird alert came in. A Yellow-headed Blackbird was reported in Wiarton. It was basically on our way home, so off we tore. When we arrived at Bluewater Park the bird was immediately found in the picnic area foraging on the ground. It was an adult male with brilliant yellow head and stood out vividly from the other blackbirds. It was intent on feeding and was very approachable. What a beautiful and unexpected thrill to see such a bird. A fitting end to the BBC outings until fall. Some great hikes this session added Yellow-Throated Warbler and Tri-colored Heron to the clubs all time list and we even contributed a new species to the county with the Black-necked Stilt. A special thanks to all who contributed by being hike leaders. Thanks to all who came out and participated in the hikes. And thanks to those of you who follow us on emails.Look forward to see what our next session holds in store for us. Enjoy your summer and see you in the fall. Our first hike will be September 4th at Shallow Lake.
