Horton Point

In Kincardine this is the section of shoreline the birds prefer. Canada Geese and Mallard Ducks hang out here and attract other species. One of my most memorable moments in birding happened here. A harlequin duck had been frequenting the beach and some Bruce Birding Club members were coming to see it. While keeping the Harlequin under tabs I also scanned the horizon. To my surprise I saw gulls harassing a bird way out over the water. Turned out to be a migrating Short-eared Owl. Moments later a second Short-eared Owl was passing by. It too was putting up with a flock of harassing gulls. This owl made a turn for the shore and was soon landing on the rocks of Horton Point. No sooner had it settled than it was mobbed by crows and was forced to shove off. Just after that I was dive bombed by two Peregrine Falcons. Next to appear nipping over the surf were some swallows with orange rumps. I didn't see the distinctive light colored neck but I would be 99% sure that these were Cave Swallows. For the next two weeks reports of Cave Swallows came in from the two lower great lakes. Oh well in this game you have to be 100% sure and so these birds get entered as Swallows sp.

ACCESS; Follow Broadway St to the lake and turn onto Saugeen St. Plenty of parking.
