We owe a big thank you to both Eric and Steve. Eric for scouting our day’s “catch”, finding the birds for us, and pointing out the field marks on the shorebirds that we saw. Steve, also for scouting, and for clearing a path with hedge clippers to make a mud flat filled with Semipalmated Sandpipers available to us. Nine shorebirds were predicted at the outset, and nine shorebirds species were seen, exceeding our expectations for the day. Two reasons for using the West Perth Wetlands, are the availability of the shorebirds, and local birders, Eric and Steve, who have consistently, over the years, guided and made our days spent there a success. Thank you again to both of you.
The best bird of the day was a Short-billed Dowitcher. The surprises of the day were Eastern Wood Peewee at the West Perth Wetlands, and a Black-billed Cuckoo at the Kincardine Lagoons. Considering the travel time spent in a car, we were able to see 50 species of birds, not bad for a summer’s day of birding.
The weather was hot varying from 31 to 27 C., full sun for most of the time with winds blowing intermittently and appreciated when they did blow.
