The club lucked out with beautiful November weather on their annual Thornbury Collingwood hike. Robins were spotted before we left Tim Hortons and at many stops throughout the day. At the Thornbury Mill Pond we saw Wigeons, Gadwalls and lots of Canada Geese plus a perched Blue Heron. According to Lynne the number of Hooded Mergansers seen here has declined each year. At Clendenan CA we saw many more Canada Geese and Mallards, with a few Green-winged Teal mixed in. Three of the four shorebirds species seen here are considered rare by eBird for this time of year. Snipe, Pectoral Sandpipers and Dunlin have mostly all flown farther south by now. Near the elevators at Collingwood Harbour we saw Longtailed Ducks and Bonaparte's Gulls close up. The nice weather made it pleasant eating outside at the arboretum. A bonus of having David Turner along was he pointed out the special trees along the arboretum trails. Ancient trees such as the Ginko and Dawn Redwood grow here as well as Kentucky Coffee and Shagbark Hickory.
Our final stop at Hen and Chicken Island was a bit shorter due to construction on a new boardwalk, but with some keen birdwatching at White’s Bay, we confirmed the presence of all three Swan species. A big thank you to Lynne and David for leading the hike, Simon for tracking the eBird lists, and everyone who shared photos on our Facebook page.
