Hi Everyone,
Thank you, Stewart and Nancy for providing a wonderful experience for us in Grand Mannan. It is a trip that will be well happily remembered by all of us.
We saw some great birds and as well as three species of whales. We saw what was considered an impossible bird to get in this location, the Tufted Puffin, probably the rarest bird seen by us, ever. We also added many new species to the list of birds seen by the BBC - Razor Bill, Northern Fulmar, Great Shearwater, Sooty Shearwater, Wilson’s Storm Petrel, Northern Gannet, Common Murre, a subspecies called Bridled Murre, Black Guillemot, and of course the Atlantic Puffin. Two more species that are new to us are Arctic Tern, and an uncommon sight for the area, Laughing Gull, which is seen as a southern oceanic bird that does not get beyond New England. And because of the northern location of the maritimes, we saw what we would in our area call winter birds - Purple Finch, and the Dark-eyed Junco. We added a second recording for us in finding a Boreal Chickadee. There were nesting Lincoln Sparrows and Nelson’s Sparrow on the island.
All birds listed below were seen on Grand Mannan except for birds where there is an * in front of the name; this indicates the bird was seen en route towards Grand Mannan.
