Twenty plus participants joined a hike today focused on ducks but started with a parliament of vultures. The TVs were roosting near the boat launch and were warming their wings post dawn. At the Independent Pond, if you include the flyover Pintails, we saw nine species of ducks. Canada Geese filed off from the pond to the fields making it easier to find the ducks. Water was low at Mirimichi and many Greenwing Teal were taking advantage. Some late Greater Yellowlegs probed the shores. A Common Loon was seen at the Saugeen River Mouth but the flocks of ducks going by were too far out to I.D. At Barbara and Pat's we saw waxwings, blackbirds and hawks. Baie du Dore treated us to tame Snow Buntings, distant Black Bellied Plovers, a juvenile Red-headed Woodpecker all the while Eagles were sparring in the sky. We lunched inside at the Bruce Power Visitors Center. No birding day is complete without a visit to a sewage lagoon. We went to the backside of Inverhuron Lagoons and found one lone Horned-Grebe. First of the year Rough-legged Hawks were moving south. A Black Scoter dove in the surf at Inverhuron. Lastly a Greater-white fronted Goose was spotted by Simon amongst the hundreds of Canadas with their sunny backs to us at Browns Pond. A great day of birding was enjoyed by all. Following is a complete list of the 55 species seen. If you want a more complete list of how many and where the birds were seen follow the link to Marilyn’s ebird trip report.
