Noteworthy

-- Cherokee uses "ᎤᏁᎳᏅᎯ" "Unelanvhi"- which means CREATOR-- see Real Meaning of Unelanvhi

I often get asked:

What is ᎡᎶᎯᏃ (elohino)? Isn't Earth simply ᎡᎶᎯ (elohi)?

and

What is ᏦᏩᏃ (Tsowano)? Isn't Joseph just ᏦᏩ?

Many times you will see an "honorific" attached to a name in Cherokee writings. This honorific, the addition of a suffix "-Ꮓ" ["-no"] is important and you will hear it in stories.

It does not just get attached to nouns either. Sometimes, you will see it on other parts of speech.

[example: ᏅᎦᏍᎪᎯᏃ nvgasgohino and ᎿᏉᏃ hnaquono -- see how many others you can spot!]

You should know: although honorifics are not part of the basic grammar of the Cherokee language, they are a fundamental part of the sociolinguistics of Cherokee, and proper use is essential to proficient and appropriate speech. Significantly, referring to oneself using an honorific, or dropping an honorific when it is required, is a serious faux pas, in either case coming across as clumsy or arrogant.

Verse 27: ᎠᏍᎦᏯ ᎠᎴ ᎠᎨᏴ Male & Female = notice the suffix change: while the sound for the "y+vowel" indicates animate or human, the meld of "-Ꮿ" for the masculine person and the meld of the suffix "-Ᏼ" for the feminine person which reminds us that the vowel sound of a suffix indicates gender and while the suffix "-Ꭰ" sound indicates male the suffix "-Ꭵ" indicates Female

the influx of the Spanish language and its influence has largely rendered this distinction extinct in modern day speech but it is borne out repeatedly in documents prior to the 1900's.

ᎢᎬᏱᏱ = first

breakdown by syllables:

"Ꭲ-" when used as a prefix, indicates that a group or collection is indicated (the whole or sum of something); [when used as a suffix, "-Ꭲ" indicates that the speaker is referring to a particular noun that is in proximity to the speaker and that they are pointing out as in a particular color, for instance, ᎩᎦᎨ which means "red" would be "ᎩᎦᎨᎢ" which would mean "This red right here that I am pointing out to you"

"-Ꭼ-" is an affix and in this usage indicates "from me to you" but also a portion of something instead of the whole; when used together, "ᎢᎬ-" as a prefix, this indicates that the subject of the sentence is a portion of a larger whole (in this case, one book, the first book, from within a set of books); "-Ꭼ-" in a prefix position also indicates prominence and or primacy;

"-Ᏹ-" an affix in a suffix position which indicates place or placement, as in this case, a line of things from beginning to ending, ordinal numbering;

"-ᏱᏱ " a suffix in a repetitive position such as this indicates a specificity as in this particular one in this particular place.

In this chapter, we used a hyphen-- The custom of substituting the word "God" with G-d in English is based on the traditional practice in Jewish law of giving God's Hebrew name a high degree of respect and reverence.

When written or printed, God's Hebrew name (and many of the stand in names used to refer to God) cannot be erased or destroyed (and after a long life of use, if discarded, must be entombed instead).

There is no prohibition in Jewish law against writing out or erasing the word "God" in English.

However, many have afforded the word "God" with the same level of respect as the Hebrew equivalents.

Because of this, many substitute "God with G-d so that they can erase or dispose of the writing without showing disrespect to God.

Some also use G!d in the same way, utilizing the exclamation point to convey their enthusiasm for Judaism and God.

We however, chose to use it this way to remind everyone that the word is different in Cherokee.
