Objectives:
Students will identify and draw the basic bones of the hand by observing the structure and proportions of the hand and creating an x-ray-inspired drawing.
Students will use oil pastels to emphasize highlights and shadows on each bone, creating the appearance of dimension and making the bones visually stand out.
Students will create a glowing effect by tracing the outside of the hand with a contrasting oil pastel color and blending the color outward from the hand.
Students will demonstrate understanding of value, color, blending, and contrast by creating a finished x-ray hand artwork that uses thick pastel application, emphasized highlights and shadows, and a blended glow effect.
Vocabulary:
Blend – To smoothly mix or soften one color into another so there are no harsh edges between them.
Bone – A hard structure inside the body that provides support and helps the body move.
Contrast – A noticeable difference between elements in an artwork, such as light and dark values or different colors.
Glow – A visual effect that makes something appear to give off light or have a soft, bright area surrounding it.
Highlight – The lightest or brightest area of an object that shows where light is hitting it.
Oil Pastel – A drawing material made from pigment mixed with a waxy or oily binder that creates rich, soft, colorful marks.
Outline – A line that follows the outside edge of a shape or object.
Shadow – A darker area of an object or artwork that represents where there is less light.
Value – The lightness or darkness of a color.
X-Ray – An image created using special rays that can show the internal structures, such as bones, inside the body.
