Vocabulary:

Column- a form of architecture originating in Greece that uses a vertical mass that is used to support a building.  While they all appear straight up and down from a distance in reality some of them tilt or lean slightly to support the weight of the building.  There are three main types: Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian.  This architectural form is still used today.

Corinthian column- the column that is most know for being the fanciest and most decorative

Doric column- the column that is the most plain

Ionic column- the column that is most famous for it's swirls

Highlights- an area within the work of art that is being touched by the light

Shadows- an area within the work of art that is not receiving as much light as it is being blocked by something else; many times it is being blocked by another part of the object itself

Value- an element of art that deals with the lightness and darkness
