Clay Whistle

Objectives:

I can demonstrate that I can create a hollow clay form  from two identical pinch pots that are attached and turn it into a whistle

I can demonstrate the ability to securely attach two clay pieces together by scoring, adding slip, and squeezing together

I can demonstrate an understanding of how moisture affects my clay and the ability to adapt my materials to control the moisture

I can demonstrate that I can neatly turn a clay whistle into an animal or other object

I can neatly add paint to my whistle to enhance the look

I can add details to my work

Vocabulary:

Attaching Clay- Score it, add slip to it, squeeze it until no more water bubbles come out

Form- a 3D shape of an object

Pinch Pot- a small bowl like container that is simply made by pinching the edges with your fingers until you have an even width throughout

Score- adding lines going in two different directions onto both pieces of clay that you want to attach together

Slip- very liquid clay; added to one piece of clay that you want to attach to another

Squeeze- lightly pressing two pieces of clay together after scoring it and adding slip so that it firmly stays together

How to make the sound:

Place the first stick into the mouthpiece that you have created to create the slit that you will blow the air into.  Then determine where the stick would be and cut a small rectangle above it in the whistle area (it is important that it is far enough back that you will not be cutting into the wall of the pinch pot).  Next insert the second stick in at a 45 degree angle.  This is important so that you can have a piece for the air to come back out.  It is angled to help create the sound as the air leaves the whistle chamber.
