Illuminated Letter Tooling
Objectives:
I can demonstrate an understanding of the process of tooling
I can demonstrate that I understand foreground, background, and overlapping
I am able to add creativity to a basic letter of the alphabet to create my own Illuminated letter
Vocabulary:
Friction- the process of creating heat by rubbing the metal so that the metal will stretch during the tooling process
Illuminated letter- any decorated or illustrated manuscript; usually. the first letter of a page or paragraph. It was always enlarged and in color with gold applied in areas, while the rest of the text remained black. The images used to enhance the letters include animals, plants, and mythological creatures.
Tooling- A process where you use tools to press into the metal to create height on the opposite side. Various tools and techniques can be used but all will create friction which heats up the metal allowing it to stretch
Foreground- the area in a work of art that is in the front.
Background- the area in a work of art that is in the back or behind something
Overlapping- when one thing has the appearance of covering up another because it is in front of it
