Objectives:
Students will design and construct a mythical creature by using imagination, observation, and planning to develop a recognizable creature with unique characteristics and details.
Students will construct a relief sculpture using a cardboard base and two additional layers of cut cardboard to create raised areas, depth, and dimension.
Students will use layering and overlapping to create the illusion of three-dimensional form while maintaining a strong, recognizable silhouette of their mythical creature.
Students will apply aluminum foil over the entire sculpture and carefully press and manipulate the foil to reveal the raised cardboard forms and surface details.
Students will use black paint as a finishing technique by applying and rubbing away the paint to create an aged, metallic appearance while emphasizing the sculpture's texture, layers, and details.

Base – The bottom or supporting surface on which a sculpture is constructed.

Relief Sculpture – A sculpture in which forms are raised from a flat background or base rather than being completely separate from it.
Texture – The actual or implied surface quality of an artwork, such as rough, smooth, wrinkled, or raised.
