Objectives:
I can demonstrate an understanding of and apply the concept of a monochromatic color scheme by using different tints and shades of a single color to create depth and mood in my underwater scene
I can demonstrate the understanding of space and value
I can create a sense of depth by layering watercolor washes and using overlapping shapes and varying intensities of color to depict objects at different distances
I can demonstrate an understanding of foreground, middle ground, and background
I can demonstrate an understanding of silhouette
I can use watercolor techniques, such as wet-on-wet, dry brush, and lifting, to create texture and movement, mimicking underwater elements like waves, coral, and sea life
I can practice control of watercolor application, ensuring clean layers and smooth transitions between tints and shades to create a cohesive and visually pleasing piece
I can demonstrate an ability to portray light traveling through water
Vocabulary:
Background- the part of the picture that is farthest from the viewer and is behind the main subject
Depth- The illusion of distance or space in an artwork, achieved through the use of overlapping, size variation, and changes in color intensity; in our work we will overlap objects and use lighter colors in the foreground and darker in the background by layering our paints
Distance- refers to how far away objects or parts of a scene are from the viewer or from each other. Artists use techniques like size, color, and detail to show how close or far things are, making their drawings look more realistic. For example, things that are closer to you might be bigger and more detailed, while things that are farther away might look smaller and blurrier
Dry Brush- A watercolor technique where a minimal amount of paint is applied with a dry brush, creating rough, textured effects on the paper
Foreground- the part of the picture that is closest to the viewer. It’s usually where the main subject or focus of the artwork is placed
Gradation- A gradual change in color or value, often used in watercolor to transition smoothly from light to dark or between colors
Layers- Thin, transparent applications of paint built up over time in watercolor to create depth, texture, or more intense colors; you will add a wash of light color as your background (or where the light is showing through the water) then you will continue to build up layers of color to create the darker areas around the edges (the ocean floor)
Lifting- A technique where paint is removed from the paper using a dry brush, sponge, or tissue to create lighter areas or textures
Monochromatic- One color with multiple values. A color scheme based on a single color or hue.
Shades- Darker versions of a color, often created by adding black or using less water in watercolor painting
Silhouette- a dark shape or outline of something, like a person or object, filled in with a solid color, usually black. It shows the basic shape and form without any details inside
Space- the area around, between, and inside objects in a picture. It helps show how objects relate to each other and how far apart they are. Artists use space to create depth and make their artwork look more interesting. For example, drawing things smaller and closer together can make them look far away, while larger, more spread out objects seem closer
Tints- Lighter versions of a color created by adding white or diluting the color with more water in watercolor painting
Transparency- The characteristic of watercolor that allows underlying layers of paint or paper to show through, creating a luminous effect
Value- how light or dark a color is. It helps show depth, contrast, and texture in a drawing or painting. For example, using different shades of gray or colors helps create shadows and highlights, making your artwork look more realistic and three-dimensional
Wash- A broad application of diluted watercolor across the paper, often used as a base layer or background
Wet-on-Wet- A watercolor technique where wet paint is applied onto a wet surface, allowing colors to blend softly
