Objectives:
I can demonstrate that I can create a draped clay form from a mold
I can demonstrate that I understand how to create and attach a foot; I have demonstrated that I can score both pieces that I want to attach, add slip to one of them, and squeeze them together to make a secure connection; SCORE,SLIP,SQUEEZE
I will add a minimum of 5 design elements to my work of art. They can be created by drawing, stamping, or making the clay into shapes and then attaching them securely to your bowl
I can finish my bowl with glaze enhancing the look and design while making it food safe.
Vocabulary:
Clay- a sticky fine-grained earth that can be molded when wet and fired when dry to create pottery that will not be broken down by water
Foot- the foot is added to the base of the bowl to help the bowl sit flat on the table ; if you do not attach it properly it will become wobble
Glaze- paint for clay; many times the glazes get brighter and take on a glassy look once fired; glaze adds an extra coating to the work that helps make it shiny and, in this case, food safe
Fettling Knife- a knife that will easily cut through clay for trimming and shaping but will not cut through your hands; it makes cutting the clay much easier
Score- creating lines going in two different directions such as hashtags in clay to attach two pieces together (first step in the score, slip, squeeze process); if you do not score (or rough up the clay), the slip will not be effective in gluing two pieces together
Slip- really wet clay that is placed on the scored areas before squeezing two pieces of clay together to join them (second step in the score, slip, squeeze process); slip is the glue that joins two pieces of clay together
Website Review Assignment- please complete and submit
The following National and State Art Standards were covered in the unit:
Creating:
Anchor Standard 1: Generate and conceptualize artistic ideas and work.
5th Grade VA
.2.5: Demonstrate quality craftsmanship through experimentation or revision when working with clay (using the fettling knife to shape clay and scoring to join pieces).
5th Grade VA
.1.5: Combine materials and techniques for an innovative idea (students incorporating the score, slip, squeeze process in their clay designs).
Presenting:
Anchor Standard 4: Select, analyze, and interpret artistic work for presentation.
5th Grade VA
.1.5: Describe how the choice of media (clay and glaze) contributes to the expressive qualities of their final artwork.
Responding:
Anchor Standard 7: Perceive and analyze artistic work.
5th Grade VA
.1.5: Identify how the elements of art (such as form and texture) contribute to the meaning of their clay project.
Connecting:
Anchor Standard 10: Synthesize and relate knowledge and personal experiences to make art.
5th Grade VA
.1.5: Apply knowledge of materials like clay and glazing techniques to create functional or decorative pottery.
Creating:
A.4.7: Develop details in their clay work through use of form, texture, and space (students using the score, slip, and squeeze technique to securely join clay pieces).
A.4.3: Use elements and principles of design to shape and refine artistic creations (sculpting clay and applying glaze for texture and color).
Understanding Art in Context:
B.4.1: Know how different cultures use clay to create both functional and decorative pieces (students understanding the historical and cultural significance of pottery).
Critique and Respond:
D.4.1: Recognize how their choice of clay, glaze, and techniques (like scoring and slipping) affects the quality and success of their final piece.
These standards emphasize the technical skills required in working with clay, the importance of craftsmanship, and the cultural relevance of ceramic art.
