Canopic jars

Objectives:

I can demonstrate that I can create a hollow clay form from two identical pinch pots that are attached and turned into a jar

I can demonstrate the ability to securely attach two clay pieces together by scoring, adding slip, and squeezing together

I can demonstrate an understanding of how moisture affects my clay and the ability to adapt my materials to control the moisture

I can demonstrate that I understand the use of canopic jars in Egyptian history


Vocabulary:

Attaching Clay- Score it, add slip to it, squeeze it until no more water bubbles come out

Canopic jar- A container traditionally used by Egyptians during the mummification process that would be used to contain the intestines, liver, stomach, and lungs

Form- a 3D shape of an object

Pinch Pot- a small bowl like container that is simply made by pinching the edges with your fingers until you have an even width throughout

Score- adding lines going in two different directions onto both pieces of clay that you want to attach together

Slip- very liquid clay; added to one piece of clay that you want to attach to another

Squeeze- lightly pressing two pieces of clay together after scoring it and adding slip so that it firmly stays together
