Ribbon Names

Objectives:

I can demonstrate the ability to draw a ribbon in 3D

I will demonstrate the ability to show good composition by having my ribbon wind throughout the entire paper making certain to overlap and twist my ribbon several times

I will demonstrate an understanding of spacing through my use of overlapping (and erasing the lines that would be covered by the piece above)

I will demonstrate an understanding on how to "finish" my ribbon through connections and erasing

I will demonstrate the ability to add value through shading and color including color transitions and blending

Vocabulary:

3D- having the three dimensions of height, width, and depth

Blended Shading- smooth gradations of color made by adjusting the pressure of the pencil; most often used with blending of those values by using a finger or a blending tool

Composition- the placement of the parts of the drawing; where you put things on your paper; making certain to use the entire space and not just fill one small area

Depth- how far back in space something goes

Transitions- having one area slowly change into something different

Value- the lightness or darkness of something

3 steps to draw ribbon:

1) Use pencil taped to a second pencil to create both sides of the ribbon and draw a line to close up the ends.

2) In the areas that overlap one another, choose which ribbon is above and erase the lines of the ribbon that is under the top ribbon.

3) In the areas that twist, connect the two parts of the ribbon on the outside edge. Then erase one of the inside lines (it does not matter which one).

3 steps to add shading to ribbon:

1) Lay your pencil on its edge and create a very light value by going over the entire ribbon (every part of it) and then blending it lightly with your finger.

2) In the areas that overlap one another, add a dark value on both sides of the ribbon on the top and then slowly lift up on the pencil to lighten up the value as you get farther from the ribbon on the top. Blend lightly with your finger when done.

3) In the areas that twist, find the opposite part from the line that you erased. Add a dark "v" filling in the pointed area. Continue with the idea of the "v" and slowly lift up on the pencil to lighten up the value as you get farther from the pointed area while maintaining the "v". Blend lightly with your finger when done.
