Objectives:
I can create a background using radiating lines and concentric rings
I can add a sphere with 3D lines that look as if they go around the sphere
I can add color to both my background and sphere using a checkerboard pattern
I can add shading to the background to enhance the look of a 3D sphere floating above the background
Vocabulary:
Concentric Rings- shapes or patterns that are arranged in circles, one inside the other, like the rings in a tree stump or a target
Radiating lines- lines that radiate from a single point in the center
Shading- when you add darker and lighter areas to a drawing to show how light and shadow fall on objects. It helps make things look more 3D and gives them texture.
Sphere- the form of a circle; the 3D version of a circle
Three-dimensional- having height, width, and depth; a shape/object that becomes a form because it goes back in space

The following National and Wisconsin State Art Standards were covered in this lesson:
Creating:
Anchor Standard 1: Generate and conceptualize artistic ideas and work.
5th Grade VA
.2.5: Demonstrate quality craftsmanship through experimentation or revisions when creating art.
5th Grade VA
.1.5: Combine ideas to generate an innovative idea for art-making (students combining the sphere, radiating lines, and checkerboard pattern).
Presenting:
Anchor Standard 2: Organize and develop artistic ideas and work.
5th Grade VA
.1.5: Experiment and develop skills in multiple art-making techniques and approaches (adding shading, radiating lines, and checkerboard patterns).
Responding:
Anchor Standard 7: Perceive and analyze artistic work.
5th Grade VA
.2.5: Analyze how line, color, shape, and texture are used to express meaning (students analyzing how their use of shading and line work creates depth).
Connecting:
Anchor Standard 10: Synthesize and relate knowledge and personal experiences to make art.
5th Grade VA
.1.5: Apply knowledge of 3D shapes and shading techniques to create the illusion of depth in their artwork.
Creating:
A.4.7: Develop details in their artworks through use of line, shape, form, color, texture, and space (creating radiating lines, concentric rings, and shading).
A.4.1: Develop a basic visual vocabulary (students using concepts like spheres, shading, and three-dimensional forms).
Understanding Art in Context:
B.4.4: Communicate their ideas by producing art forms in relation to established art traditions (applying shading and perspective to create 3D illusions).
Critique and Respond:
D.4.1: Recognize how their choice of media, tools, techniques, and processes help determine the results of their work (students will use shading and line work to enhance the floating effect of their sphere).
These standards support building skills in perspective, spatial understanding, and the use of design elements like lines and shading to create visual depth.
