Styrofoam Carvings

Objectives:

Students will design and carve a three-dimensional sculpture from a rectangular block of floral foam.
Students will incorporate at least one intentional area of negative space within their sculpture.
Students will demonstrate safe and proper carving techniques while maintaining craftsmanship.
Students will apply knowledge of form, depth, and space to create a visually interesting composition.
Students will use paint intentionally to enhance carved details, depth, and focal areas.

Vocabulary:

Carving – A subtractive sculpture technique where material is removed to create form.
Composition – The arrangement of elements in an artwork.
Depth – The illusion of space within an artwork.
Form – A three-dimensional object with height, width, and depth.
Negative Space – The empty or open areas around or within a sculpture.
Positive Space – The solid areas of a sculpture.
Subtractive Sculpture – A sculpture created by removing material.
Three-Dimensional (3D) – Having height, width, and depth.
