Fire Halls
1890 Alice Sager sold the property at 128 North 10th to the City of Geneva.
1890 The Geneva Volunteer Fire Department was organized in 1890. The City purchased this property from J. H. Sager and erected a building to store the hose and hose carts. A fire bell was installed to alert the firemen that they were needed.
1915 The Geneva Volunteer Fire Department moved their equipment from 128 No. 10th to the new fire hall, located in the south part of the new building. The fire bell was not moved to the new location. The city council chambers were on the second floor as well as the fire department meeting room. The city marshal’s office, jail, and men’s restrooms were located in the southwest corner of the building.
1917 Red Cross work was carried out in the firemen’s room in the city hall.
1942 The USO was headquartered on the second floor shortly after the Fairmont Army Air Field opened. It was a place for soldiers and local girls to meet and visit, to write letters and get to know one another. Cookies and coffee, tea, and soft drinks were served. USO dances were held in the Catholic school hall on E Street.
1973 A new fire hall was built just north of the auditorium, with the doors facing H Street. The old fire hall was remodeled and the city council, city clerk, and city administrator moved from 160 No. 9th to offices here. Part of the second floor was remodeled into office space. The public restrooms were also relocated from elsewhere in the building.
2020 A new fire barn was built on F Street.
2020 In September, the new fire hall was dedicated.
