George W. Smith
Born on Dec. 10, 1846 in Hillsdale County, Michigan to Job A. and Hannah Smith.
Died on Sept. 7, 1924 in Los Angeles, CA. Buried in Geneva, NE.
Married Addie Dempster on June 9, 1881 in Geneva, NE.
Parents of four children: Job, George D., Florence, and Hazel.
He spent his early life on his father’s farm.
At age 24 he went to Owasso, Michigan, to assist his brother in the drug business.
After several years with his brother, he took a position in a wholesale grocery firm.
He and a friend purchased a grocery store in Owasso.
In 1878 he went to Nebraska. He moved to Geneva and opened a loan office with Walter Fifield. This grew into the Geneva Exchange Bank the following year.
In 1888, this bank became the First National Bank of Geneva.
In 1894, he and Fifield sold their interest in the First National Bank and it was consolidated with the Geneva National Bank.
He was actively looking after his farming and other interests.
Later in life, he and his wife spent time in California for the benefit of Mrs. Smith’s health.
Mr. Smith belonged to the Masonic Lodge and the Congregational Church.

Located at 324 No. 12th, the house was built in the Queen Anne style by George W. Smith, Geneva banker, at a cost of $7,000.
