David Creola Mowry
Born March 1,1857 near Princeton, Bureau County, Illinois
Married March 30,1882 to Lucy M. Brown at Summit, near Shickley, Nebraska
Died February 19, 1938 at the home of his daughter Mrs. Thomas (Verna)Wagner in Geneva Township.
Father of 9 children
Came to Fillmore County in 1878 by horse and buggy.
Purchased a farm in Bryant Township and farmed until 1886 when he moved to Geneva.
Country school education then attended a select school and studied carpentry and plumbing.
Various occupations: First business venture was a planing mill, worked for the City of Geneva, Ward’s furniture store/Opera house, plumbing business, tent and awning, and general repair work.
“D. C. Mowry’s wonderful fantastical fantasma, a combination of automatical figures interwoven with music, mirth, songs and witty sayings. A drama in three acts. Don't fail to see it. At the opera house tonight November 22, 1894.”
In his later years, D. C. had a museum along Court (G) Street where he displayed unique old curiosities. His collection included thousands of articles dating back to the early history of Geneva and Fillmore County. In 1936 he donated his collection to the Hastings museum. Just a few months later, fire destroyed the building and all of the contents where his museum had been housed.
