1880s Austin D. Shackelford and Jerry Nance were the first blacksmiths in Fillmore County. They were farmers as well as operating a blacksmith and machine shop in Dudley. Austin moved to Geneva, a block east of the Mill, where he opened a blacksmith shop with his son Jason. Later Jason had his own shop on the east side of the square.
