He moved with his parents to a farm near Bee in Seward county when he was six.

In 1885, he was married to Stella May Terwilliger.

When he first came to Geneva about 1907 he was a stock buyer.

In 1907, he opened the Bedford Wholesale Produce House at 162 So. 8th Street.

In 1910, he added the manufacture of ice to his business.

In 1923, he spent about six months in California before returning to Geneva.

In 1925, he opened a wholesale business at 818 G Street.

In 1930 he built a new building at 180 So. 8th Street.

He served on the city council several times and was the mayor.
