10/30 - 12/5: Derivative Rules & Applications of the Derivative

Now that we know what a derivative is and how they can be useful, we're studying ways to find derivatives of more complicated functions.

Tuesday, 10/30 - we studied how functions can be composed of multiple functions. Here are the slides from class. You have an extended deadline of tonight at 10PM to submit a topic for your Math Exploration to this link.

Wednesday, 10/31 - we solved some tough trigonometry problems in our groups.

Thursday, 11/1 - we learned about the chain rule for finding the derivatives of composite functions. Here are the slides from class. Your HW is Ex. 13.2 (p. 459) #1 a,b,e,g,j,k.

Friday, 11/2 - we applied the chain rule to a variety of problems. Here are the slides from class. Your HW is Ex. 13.2 (p. 459) #5.

Monday, 11/5 - we reminded ourselves about the rubric for the Math Exploration and we reviewed our topic submissions to see if we were approved on this public spreadsheet. Here are the slides from class. Please see the "Math Exploration" section of this website for sample explorations and the spreadsheet of topic submissions.

Tuesday, 11/6 - it is Election Day and a Chancellor's Conference Day - no students in school. Good luck on writing your Extended Essays!

Wednesday, 11/7 - we read more sample Math Explorations. Here are the slides from class. Please see the "Math Exploration" section of this website for sample explorations.

Thursday, 11/8 - we found and used the derivative of sine and cosine functions. Here are the slides from class. Your HW is Ex. 13.1 (p. 451) #1a, 1e, 2a, 3.

Friday, 11/9 - we applied the chain rule to derivatives involving the sine and cosine functions. Here are the slides from class. Your HW is to work on your Math Exploration.

Monday, 11/12 - it is Veterans' Day and we have no school.

Tuesday, 11/13 - we practiced using the chain rule combined with the derivatives of sine and cosine. Here are the slides from class. Your HW is Exercise 13.5 #7, 16, 21.

Wednesday, 11/14 - we discovered and used the derivatives of exponentials and logarithms. Here are the slides from class. Your HW is Ex 13.1 #1bcdf, 2c, 4, 5.

Thursday, 11/15 - we applied the chain rule to the derivatives of exponentials and logarithms. Here are the slides from class. Your HW is Ex 13.2 #1cfil, 4de, 7.

Friday, 11/16 - we found the derivatives of products of functions using the Product Rule. Here are the slides from class. Your HW is to work on your Math Exploration.

Monday, 11/19 - we found the derivatives of quotients of functions using the Quotient Rule. Here are the slides from class. Your HW is Ex 13.3 #1abcefjl, 2bc.

Tuesday, 11/20 - we practiced deciding which derivative rules to use with problems requiring the chain, product, and quotient rules. Here are the slides from class. Your HW is Ex 13.3 #3ab, 5, 6.

Wednesday, 11/21 - we prepared for working on our Math Exploration after the long weekend, and we practiced using derivatives that come from the product and quotient rules. Here are the slides from class. Have a great long weekend!

Thursday, 11/22 & Friday, 11/23 - it's Thanksgiving Break. Enjoy the holiday!

Monday, 11/26 - Wednesday, 11/28 - Mr. Lao is absent on the Princeton Blairstown Center trip with Class IV discipuli. You are working productively with access to laptops in class on your Math Exploration.

Thursday, 11/29 - a draft for peer review of your Math Exploration is due in class, either printed out or accessible from a computer. We are working on peer reviewing our drafts today. Here are the graphic organizers we used in class to help frame our Explorations to each other and to provide feedback to each other. Here are the slides from class. Your next deadline is a draft (for Mr. Lao to read and give you comments) by 10PM on Thursday, December 20th uploaded to ManageBac. If it is more stressful for you to have this deadline here rather than some time during break, please let Mr. Lao know.

Friday, 11/30 - you have a flex day of work on your college applications or your IB portfolio.

Monday, 12/3 - we considered how to incorporate the feedback we received into our Math Explorations. Here are the slides from class. Here is a calendar to use as a tool to help you plan out your next steps on your Math Exploration.

Tuesday, 12/4 - we did practice problem to prepare for our quiz on using derivative rules. Here are the problems from class.

Wednesday, 12/5 - we have a quiz on using derivative rules (sine, cosine, e, ln, chain, product, quotient).
