10/30 - 11/15: Voronoi Diagrams

We are learning about a new type of geometric diagram that's useful in partitioning flat spaces, called Voronoi Diagrams.

Tues, 10/29 - we have a quiz on straight lines: different line equations, graphing lines, and systems of linear equations. We also started a new topic, and investigated a new type of diagram. Here are the slides from class and here is the worksheet from class.

Wed, 10/30 - we used Desmos to investigate Voronoid diagrams and food deserts. Here are the slides from class. Here is the Desmos activity.

Thurs, 10/31 - we practiced finding the equations and using perpendicular bisectors. Here is the worksheet from class including your HW on the back.

Fri, 11/1 - we interpreted Voronoi diagrams, paying special attention to precise vocabulary. Here is the worksheet from class including your HW on the back..

Mon, 11/4 - we constructed Voronoi diagrams from scratch. Here are the slides from class. Here is a Desmos file with our Voronoi example. Here is the guided worksheet from class, including your HW on the last page.

Tuesday, 11/5 - it's Election Day and a Chancellor's Conference Day for teachers. You didn't have class.

Wednesday, 11/6 - we practiced more problems where we need to construct Voronoi diagrams. We focused on identifying missing sites and missing edges. Here are the slides from class. Here are the problems from class, which you should finish for HW.

Thursday, 11/7 - we modified Voronoi diagrams by adding sites to existing diagrams. Here are the slides from class. Here is the worksheet from class, including your HW problems.

Friday, 11/8 - we continued practicing adding sites for Voronoi diagrams. We also used Voronoi diagrams for nearest neighbor interpolation estimates. Here are the slides from class. Here is the worksheet of problems from class, which you can finish for HW.

Monday, 11/11 - it's Veterans' Day and we have no school.

Tuesday, 11/12 - we solved the "toxic waste dump problem" for Voronoi diagrams. Here are the slides from class, and here is the worksheet from class which includes your HW.

Wednesday, 11/13 - we practiced a variety of problems involving Voronoi diagrams. Here are the problems from class.

Thursday, 11/14 - we have a group quiz on Voronoi diagrams. You will work together to solve some problems and one paper will be collected for the entire group's grade.

Friday, 11/15 - you have a culminating exam on Voronoi diagrams. Here are the topics on your exam:

  • using equations of lines
  • finding perpendicular bisectors
  • find midpoints, slopes, and distances (all formulae given to you)
  • interpret what parts of a Voronoi diagram mean
  • make a Voronoi diagram
  • find missing edges or sites or vertices of a Voronoi diagram
  • add a site to a Voronoi diagram
  • use nearest-neighbor interpolation
  • find the optimal placement of a new site with the largest empty circle solution
