We start studying the Option topic for HL Math - Discrete Mathematics.

Thursday, 11/10 - we looked at the pigeonhole principle as a method of proof. Here are the slides from class. Your HW is to work on your Math Exploration.

Friday, 11/11 - Veterans' Day

Monday, 11/14 - we looked at proof by contradiction as a method of proof. Here are the slides from class. Your HW is to work on your Math Exploration.

Tuesday, 11/15 - we looked at proof by strong induction as a method of proof. Here are the slides from class. Your HW is p. 11 (Ex. 1C) #2 & 3 (optional challenge #4 & 5).

Wednesday, 11/16 - we looked at the definition of divisibility and applied to to some simple proofs of properties of divisibility. Here are the slides from class. Your HW is this worksheet of proving simple divisibility problems - choose 4 of the 8 to try, at minimum. The full proof solutions are on the back.

Thursday, 11/17 - we looked at the division algorithm and how it helps us break numbers down into classes. Here are the slides from class. Your HW is this worksheet.

Friday, 11/18 - we looked at the greatest common divisor of two numbers, the least common multiple of two numbers, and the definition of relatively prime numbers. Here are the slides from class. Your HW is to work on your Math Exploration.

Monday, 11/21 - we looked at the Euclidean Algorithm as a way to find gcd(a,b). We also solved related Diophantine equations. Here are the slides from class. Your HW is p. 25 (Ex. 2C) #1e, 2e, 3, 4, 5.

Tuesday, 11/22 - we looked at prime numbers, their properties, and the fundamental theorem of arithmetic. Here are the slides from class. Your HW is p. 30 (Ex. 2D) #1abc, 2, 3, 4.

Wednesday, 11/23 - we looked at how to represent integers in different bases (not base 10 like we're used to) and convert between them. Here are the slides from class. Your HW is to eat some pie.

Thursday, 11/24 - Friday, 11/25 - Thanksgiving Recess. Enjoy your days off!

Monday, 11/28 - we looked at arithmetic operations on integers written in different bases. Here are the slides from class. Your HW is p. 39 (Ex. 3C) #1ai, 1bi, 2ai, 2bi, 3.

Tuesday, 11/29 & Wednesday, 11/30 - we practiced all kinds of problems in number theory, from divisibility to gcd and the Euclidean Algorithm, to using prime numbers, to using different bases. Your exam on this content is tomorrow. Here are the practice problems from class. HW is to study for your exam.

Thursday, 12/1 - we have our exam on the first part of number theory. Your HW is to work on your Math Exploration. A draft for peer review is due, printed out and brought to class, on Monday, 12/5.

Friday, 12/2 - You have a counseling workshop in math class on the topic of stress management in college. Your HW is to work on your Math Exploration. A draft for peer review is due, printed out and brought to class, on Monday, 12/5.
