Wednesday, 9/13 - Wednesday, 10/4: Introduction to Vectors & Vector Operations

Post date: Sep 13, 2017 2:27:16 PM

We are starting our study of vector quantities. We're working with the geometry and algebra of vectors, as well as a special kind of multiplication with vectors.

Wednesday, 9/13 - we were introduced to what a vector is, the notation we use with vectors, and some key vocabulary words to do with vectors. Here are the slides from class. Your HW is to work on either CAS or EE or TOK.

Thursday, 9/14 - we viewed vectors geometrically and did vector arithmetic geometrically. Here are the slides from class. Your HW is page 258 (Ex. 8.1/8.2) #1 and 16.

Friday, 9/15 - we saw how to write vectors with numbers in component form and in unit vector form. Here are the slides from class. Your HW is this worksheet. You should do front and back. You can check your answers at the bottom of the back page. Also for HW is a mind map which I will collect.

Monday, 9/18 - we translated all the arithmetic we can do with vectors geometrically into algebraic manipulations. Here are the slides from class. Your HW is p. 263 (Ex. 8.1/8.2) #12-14. Your next mind map is due on Monday, 9/25.

Tuesday, 9/19 - we found the vector between two points on the plane. Here are the slides from class. Your HW is p. 262 (Ex. 8.1/8.2) #2, 5, 8, 11.

Wednesday, 9/20 - we are introduced to vectors in 3D, Here are the slides from class. Here is the worksheet from class, which you should finish for HW. You also have another mind map due for HW on Monday.

Have a nice long weekend!

Monday, 9/25 - we did practice problems with 3D vectors to extend our understanding of vector operations from 2D. Here is the worksheet of problems we worked on in class. You should finish that worksheet for HW and complete in your textbook p. 396 (Ex. 12.1) #5a, #6a, 10. Your next mind map is due on Monday, 10/2.

Tuesday, 9/26 - we defined what parallel means for vectors and saw how unit vectors are helpful to create new vectors that are parallel to other vectors. Here are the slides from class. Your HW is p. 258 (Ex. 8.1/8.2) #3 & ?p. 264 (Ex. 8.3) #4-5.

Wednesday, 9/27 - we are introduced to a type of multiplication with vectors called the dot product. It is most helpful to tell us about angles with vectors. Here are the slides from class. Here is the worksheet we worked through explaining the dot product. Your HW is p. 270 (Ex. 8.4) #1ac, 4a, 11 & p. 400 (Ex. 12.2) #1ab, 2, 14,

Thursday, 9/28 - we reviewed what the dot product is and some of its most important properties, particularly with regards to angles between vectors and especially with right angles. Here are the slides from class. Your HW is p. 270 (Ex. 8.4) #4b, 8-9 & p. 400 (Ex. 12.2) #1def, 5, 18.

Friday, 9/29 - we practiced IB problems involving the dot product. Here are the IB problems from class. You should finish them for HW. Here are the IB mark schemes so that you can check your answers.

Monday, 10/2 - we prepared for our quiz happening on Wednesday. Here are the quiz practice problems from class. Here are the solutions to those problems.

Tuesday, 10/3 - you have an IPS assignment in class. It is open notes and open calculator and will teach you an extension of things that we can do with vectors.

Wednesday, 10/4 - you have a quiz on vector algebra and geometry. The topics for your quiz are: adding, subtracting, negative, and scaling vectors geometrically (with pictures & tail-to-tip) and algebraically (in component for or in base unit vector form); finding magnitude; finding the vector between two points; finding and using parallel vectors; finding and using unit vectors; finding and using the dot product of two vectors, particularly when the vectors are perpendicular.
