We're doing Expos to review our summer assignments before we jump into new content.
Monday, 9/12 - This was Eid al-Adha, and no public schools were in session.
Tuesday, 9/13 - Today we started work on our Expo presentations. Here are the slides from class, where you can find your Expo groups and the procedure for these Expos.
- Discipuli will receive a grade for completion of their summer assignment
- Discipuli will prepare and present Expo presentations, assessed by the TBLS Expo Rubric for a 100 point process category grade
- Presentations should remain under 7 minutes and will be done with the aid of a document camera
- Presentations should follow the steps of the "How to Solve It" framework (understand the problem, devise a plan, carry out the plan, review/extend - see below) and address each of the substeps
- Talk time should be balanced among group members (probably means don't give one part of the framework to each person)
- Questions on the exam will be very similar to those found in Expo presentations (some maybe exactly the same)
- Schedule: Prep on Tuesday and Wednesday; Presentations on Thursday and Friday (and maybe -Monday) and Exam on Monday.
Below is the "How to Solve It" framework we used in class, which will be helpful for you to think about throughout your IB math career.
- Understand the Problem
- What is the given information?
- What are you asked to find or show?
- What are some keywords? Define them.
- Devise a Plan
- How are the given info and unknown connected?
- Which properties or formulas could be useful?
- What strategies can you use to organize the information? e.g. graphs, diagrams, tables, etc.
- Carry out the Plan
- Show all steps of the solution
- Keep the information organized
- Have a justification for your steps
- Review/Extend
- How can you check your result?
- What are possible misconceptions? Why?
- Are there other ways to derive the same result?
Wednesday, 9/14 and Thursday, 9/15 - we continued working on the Expos in our groups.
Friday, 9/16 and Monday, 9/19 - we present our Expos.
Tuesday, 9/20 - we'll present any leftover Expos and also take an exam with questions directly inspired by Expo problems.
