Your summer assignment for math class will be to learn about complex numbers. The topic is shorter than most topics we’ve learned this year and is completely manageable on your own. We will devote a bit of time at the start of next school year to reviewing what you’ve learned over the summer.

The eleven lessons plus one practice quiz that follow about complex numbers are designed to be just like lessons from the school year. They’re designed to be 45 minutes long, they start with a warm-up, they have some notes and explanations, they have guided problems, and they end with homework. When the lesson says to try some problems for 5 minutes, try for 5 minutes, even if you struggle and don’t get to all of them. After the time is up, then you can peek at the solutions – not earlier! When the lessons have notes, read and try to understand them – don’t skim over the notes. For the homework, you should devote about 45 minutes of solid work time, even if you don’t attempt all the problems. You can complete all of these lessons individually or collaboratively with friends.

At the start of next school year, your complex number HW will be checked for completion, as will your practice quiz. You will take a real quiz on complex numbers during the first week of school.

Follow the lessons in order and spread out the lessons across your summer, instead of cramming them into the last week of break. Direct any questions you have to Mr. Lao
