9/26 - 10/22: Financial Math

We are studying financial mathematics and noticing how applying interest rates, inflation rates, depreciation rates, etc., resemble geometric sequences. We'll take it a step further and also study loans and amortisation, which is essentially the math of paying back loans.

Thursday, 9/26 - we are starting a new topic (which won't be on your exam tomorrow), on financial math. We started be looking at compound interest. Here are the slides from class. Here is your worksheet for HW, due Wednesday after the long weekend.

Friday, 9/27 - we have our exam on sequences and series. You are allowed a GDC and will have access to the IB formula book (a blank copy that we will provide to you). You will have the whole period.

Monday, 9/30 & Tuesday, 10/1 - it's Rosh Hashanah and we didn't have school.

Wednesday, 10/2 - we studied inflation, the real value of investments, and depreciation, and how we might calculate the impact these have on our money and goods. Here are the slides from class. Here is the worksheet of problems for HW.

Thursday, 10/3 and Friday, 10/4 - we used the Time Value of Money Solver (TVM Solver) on our GDCs. Here is the guided packet that walks us through how to use the TVM Solver.

Monday, 10/7 - we thought about loan repayment and amortization. Here are the slides from class. Here is the worksheet of problems for homework.

Tuesday, 10/8 - we continued working with the TVM Solver and amortization scenarios. Here are the slides from class and here is the guided worksheet from class which includes your HW on the back.

Wednesday, 10/9 - It's Yom Kippur and we didn't have school.

Thursday, 10/10 - we challenged ourselves and looked at the loan repayments formula to take a peek at the math behind what our TVM Solver has been telling us for loan amortization. Here are the slides from class and here is the guided worksheet from class. No HW tonight.

Friday, 10/11 - you explored annuities and the TVM Solver, mostly with problems surrounding retirement and withdrawals from annuities. Here is the guided worksheet from class, which includes your HW at the end.

Monday, 10/14 - it's Indigenous Peoples Day' and we didn't have school.

Tuesday, 10/15 - we looked at a special kind of annuity, called a perpetuity. Here are the slides from class. No HW tonight - rest well for the PSATs!

Wednesday, 10/16 - you're taking the PSATs - good luck!

Thursday, 10/17 - we practiced using the TVM Solver in all the different applications that we've used so far. Here are the problems from class.

Friday, 10/18 - Tuesday 10/22 - we're wrapping up our unit of financial math by doing a project to help increase our financial literacy. Here are the details for this project.
