Differentiation Techniques & Optimization: Tuesday, 1/3 - Monday, 1/23

Post date: Jan 3, 2017 10:00:04 PM

We are finishing up our study of derivatives by looking at the product and quotient rules for finding derivatives as well as seeing how derivatives can be applied in optimization problems.

Tuesday, 1/3 - we reviewed all the derivatives we've seen so far, especially with using the chain rule. Here are the slides from class. Here is the worksheet for HW - you should complete the first side, #6, the first #7, and #8.

Wednesday, 1/4 - we learned the product rule to find the derivatives of products of functions. Here are the slides from class. Your HW is Exercise 13.3 #1a,b,c,d,g,k, #2c.

Thursday, 1/5 - we learned the quotient rule to find derivatives of functions dividing each other. Here are the slides from class. Your HW is Ex 13.3 #1e, f, h, i, l, 2b.

Friday, 1/6 - you had the "Life After TBLS" Alumni Panel discussion.

Monday, 1/9 - we practiced using the product and quotient rules. Here are the slides from class. Your HW is Ex 13.3 #3ab, 5, 6.

Tuesday, 1/10 - we began the topic of Optimization today in class by doing some problems asking for maximum or minimum values. We did these by guessing and checking; we'll approach the same problems with calculus techniques tomorrow. Here are the slides from class. There is no HW tonight, but remember that if you got below a 65 on the IA, you are encouraged to come to office hours (Room 176) tomorrow after school.

Wednesday, 1/11 - we solved the same problems as we did yesterday, but with calculus techniques of optimization instead of guessing and checking. Here are the slides from class. Here is the worksheet from class. Your HW is Exercise 11.3 #22; Exercise 13.5 #3; Exercise 13.5 #24.

Thursday, 1/12 - we solved optimization problems involving geometric figures. Here are the slides from class. Your HW is 13.4 #2, 4.

Friday, 1/13 - we solved more optimization problems with geometric figures. Here are the slides from class. Your HW is Ex. 13.5 #29, Ch.13 Practice Questions #17.

Tuesday, 1/17 - we solved a difficult geometric optimization problem. Here are the slides from class. Your HW is Ch.13 Practice Questions #8,10,13 (no optimization).

Wednesday, 1/18 - we solved optimization problems using the coordinate grid. Here are the slides from class. Your HW is Exercise 13.5 #22,26.

Thursday, 1/19 and Fri 1/20 - we are doing practice problems to prepare for our exam on Monday. On the exam will be using the product rule, quotient rule, and chain rule, as well as applying them to find tangent and normal lines, and also solving optimization problems. Here are the practice problems from class (with solutions). Here is the worked solution to your HW problem Ex. 13.5 #22 and here is the solution to Ex. 13.5 #26.

Monday, 1/23 - you have your final exam of the semester, on using derivative rules and on optimization.
