10/11 - 11/12: Applications of Integration

We're now studying how we can use antiderivatives, from finding areas, to finding volumes, to reasoning through kinematic motion problems.

Friday, 10/11 - Mr. Lao is flying to his brother's wedding and isn't in school this day. You learned about the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus, which allows us to find values of definite integrals. We'll review after the long weekend. Here is the worksheet from class. No HW unless you didn't finish in class.

Monday, 10/14 - it's Indigenous Peoples Day' and we didn't have school.

Tuesday, 10/15 - we reviewed our work from Mr. Lao's absence and practiced evaluating definite integrals with and without technology. Here are the slides from class. Your HW is in your textbook, p. 807 (Ex. 16.4) #1-10 (check using your GDC).

Wednesday, 10/16 - the Class II children are taking the PSAT and you as Class I children are doing workshops. We didn't have class.

Thursday, 10/17 - Mr. Lao is absent at a regional IB Math meeting to help making teaching and learning IB Math at TBLS better. You looked into some properties of definite integrals. Here is the worksheet from class, which includes your practice and homework problems.

Friday, 10/18 - we continued practicing evaluating definite integrals, but also practiced integration with the u-substitution method. Here are the slides from class. Please submit your Math Exploration topic by 10PM on Wed, 10/30: bit.ly/HLMathIATopic.

Monday, 10/21 - we found the funky shaped areas between two curves. Here are the slides from class. Your HW is p. 818 (Ex. 16.6) #1, 4, 5, 7, 8. Please submit your Math Exploration topic by 10PM on Wed, 10/30: bit.ly/HLMathIATopic.

Tuesday, 10/22 - we found the volumes of solids of revolution. Here are the slides from class. Your HW is p. 825 (Ex. 16.7) #1-4, 9. Please submit your Math Exploration topic by 10PM on Wed, 10/30: bit.ly/HLMathIATopic.

Wednesday, 10/23 - we found the volumes of solids of revolution defined by two functions (they have holes). Here are the slides from class. Your HW is p. 825 (Ex. 16.7) #10, 12, 13, 19. Please submit your Math Exploration topic by 10PM on Wed, 10/30: bit.ly/HLMathIATopic.

Thursday, 10/24 - we found areas and volumes of figures with integrals involving functions of y. Here are the slides from class. Here is the worksheet from class, including your HW which is p. 818 (Ex. 16.6) #13, 14 & p. 825 (Ex. 16.7) #21-23. Here is the complete solution to the difficult problem from class. Please submit your Math Exploration topic by 10PM on Wed, 10/30: bit.ly/HLMathIATopic.

Friday, 10/25 - we practiced a variety of area and volume problems. Here are the slides from class. Here are the mixed review problems on areas and volumes from class. Please submit your Math Exploration topic by 10PM on Wed, 10/30: bit.ly/HLMathIATopic.

Monday, 10/28 - we continued practicing finding areas and volumes. Here are the slides from class. Here are the mixed review problems on areas and volumes from class. Please submit your Math Exploration topic by 10PM on Sat, 11/1: bit.ly/HLMathIATopic.

Tuesday, 10/29 - we reviewing our exams on indefinite integrals. Here are the slides from class. Please submit your Math Exploration topic by 10PM on Sat, 11/1: bit.ly/HLMathIATopic.

Wednesday, 10/30 - Friday, 11/1 - we applied our knowledge of derivatives and integrals to kinematics problems. Here are the slides from class on Wednesday. Here is the packet of notes and problems from class. Mr. Lao is absent on Thursday and Friday. On Thursday, you should work on the problems in Exercise 17A.2. On Friday, you should work on the problems in Exercise 19C.2.

Please submit your Math Exploration topic by 10PM on Sat, 11/1: bit.ly/HLMathIATopic.

Monday, 11/4 - we have a group practice quiz on the applications of integrals.

Tuesday, 11/5 - it's Election Day and a Chancellor's Conference Day for teachers. You didn't have class. Good luck on your EEs!

Wednesday, 11/6 - we reminded ourselves about the rubric for the Math Exploration and we reviewed our topic submissions to see if we were approved on this public spreadsheet. Here are the slides from class. Please see the "Math Exploration" section of this website for sample explorations and the spreadsheet of topic submissions.

Thursday, 11/7 - we read more sample Math Explorations. Here are the slides from class. Please see the "Math Exploration" section of this website for sample explorations.

Friday, 11/8 - we got new textbooks today (yay!) and we practiced problems involving applications of integration. Here are the problems from class and here are the full worked solutions.

Monday, 11/11 - it's Veterans' Day and we have no school.

Tuesday, 11/12 - you have an exam on the applications of integration. You should bring a GDC to the exam. The exam covers using integrals to find areas with respect to the x-axis (there might be a hole), volumes with respect to the x-axis (there might be a hole), areas and volumes with respect to the y-axis (again, holes), and kinematics problems.
