Wed. 11/1 - Wed. 11/15: Introduction to Derivatives

Post date: Oct 30, 2017 9:35:36 PM

We are studying calculus. The first part of calculus is called "differential calculus" and will involve derivatives. Your quiz on finding and using derivatives using the power rule and finding and using equations of tangent lines and normal lines will be on Wednesday, 11/15.

Wednesday, 11/1 - we connected the idea of finding Ms. Yang's exact speed at 7:30 to a graphical representation of rate of change and saw some new vocabulary words. Here are the slides from class. Here is the worksheet from class with the notes and a sample problem. You should use the time you normally spend on HW to work on catching up on CAS or EE or sleep.

Thursday, 11/2 - we pulled all our knowledge of instantaneous rate of change together to give a definition of the derivative. Here are the slides from class. You should use the time you normally spend on HW to work on catching up on CAS or EE or sleep.

Friday, 11/3 - we continued to practice using the definition of the derivative ("differentiating from first principles"). You should use the time you normally spend on HW to work on catching up on CAS or EE or sleep.

Monday, 11/6 - we came back together as a class to review the definition of the derivative, review the notation we use for the derivative, and practiced using a new shortcut, called the power rule, for finding the derivative of special kind of functions. Here are the notes about derivatives we've seen so far. Here are the slides from class. Your HW is p. 365 (Ex. 11.2) #6-13.

Tuesday, 11/7 - it's Election Day; no school for you.

Wednesday, 11/8 - we extended our knowledge of derivatives to write down equations of tangent lines to functions. Here are the slides from class. Your HW is p. 386 (Ex. 11.4) #1. Your quiz on finding derivatives with the power rule and finding and using tangent and normal lines will be on Wednesday, 11/15.

Thursday, 11/9 - we practiced our knowledge of derivatives and tangent lines. Here are the slides from class. Your HW is p. 365 (Ex. 11.2) #19-21.

Friday, 11/10 - we wrote and used equations of normal lines. Here are the slides from class. For HW, you should work on your Math Exploration. We have a group practice quiz process grade on Monday, normal in class practice problems on Tuesday, and your first quiz on calculus (derivatives with the power rule, tangent lines, and normal lines) on Friday.

Monday, 11/13 - you have a group practice quiz. You'll work together in your groups to solve some IB problems involving tangent and normal lines. I'll collect one paper from the entire group to grade for the group's grade.

Tuesday, 11/14 - we have practice problems to feel more confident in our skills with derivatives.

Wednesday, 11/15 - you have your first quiz in Calculus. It is on finding the derivative with the power rule and using derivatives to find tangent and normal line equations and using tangent and normal line equations.
