We are studying how derivatives tell us about the shape and behavior of a function.

Monday, 11/14 - we looked at what "extrema" are on function graphs. Here are the slides from class. Your HW is Page 381 (Ex. 11.3) #2, 5, 6, 7.

Tuesday, 11/15 - we analyzed critical points of functions. Here are the slides from class. Your HW is Page 381 (Ex. 11.3) #8, 9, 10, 13.

Wednesday, 11/16 - we looked at the second derivative and what it tells us about the shape of functions (about their concavity). Here are the slides from class. Your HW is Page 382 (Ex. 11.3) #15, 16, 18, 19.

Thursday, 11/17 - we looked at different uses of the second derivative: finding possible inflection points and testing and classifying stationary points. Here are the slides from class. Your optional HW is Exercise 11.3 #11 a-c.

Friday, 11/18 - we continued to practice finding stationary points and inflection points. Here are the slides from class. Your HW is Exercise 11.3 #11 a-c.

Monday, 11/21 - we sketched graphs based on graphical information from the derivative. Here are the slides from class. Your HW is Ch. 11 Practice Questions #8,10.

Tuesday, 11/22 - we still practiced sketching graphs of original functions when we know the graph of its derivative. Here are the slides from class. Your HW is Ch. 13 Practice Questions #1, 15, 19.

Wednesday, 11/23 - we decomposed functions to help us think about how functions are put together. Here are the slides from class. Your HW is to eat some pie.

Thursday, 11/24 - Friday, 11/25 - Thanksgiving Recess (No School)

Monday, 11/28 - we learned how to take derivatives of composite functions with the chain rule. Here are the slides from class. Your HW is Exercise 13.2 #1 a,b,e,j,k.

Tuesday, 11/29 - we used the chain rule to find tangent and normal lines. Here are the slides from class. Your HW is Exercise 13.2 #2ab, 5, 6.

Wednesday, 11/30 - we reviewed for our exam and continued to practice curve sketching and the chain rule. Here are the slides from class (where you can find the topics for the exam). Your HW is to study for your exam.

Thursday, 12/1 - we have our exam on the first part of differential calculus. Your HW is to work on your Math Exploration. A draft for peer review is due, printed out and brought to class, on Monday, 12/5.

Friday, 12/2 - You have a counseling workshop in math class on the topic of stress management in college. Your HW is to work on your Math Exploration. A draft for peer review is due, printed out and brought to class, on Monday, 12/5.
