9/9 - 9/26: Sequences and Series

We are starting off the year by reviewing what you've learned about sequences and series. We'll extend your knowledge just a bit and focus on getting used to the way IB expects us to problem solve.

Monday, 9/9 - we start off with some basics about significant figures, approximations, measurement, and error to help set the stage for the rest of the year. Here are the slides from class. Your HW is the backside of this worksheet. Be sure to check your answers with the answer key on the front.

Tuesday, 9/10 - we reviewed arithmetic sequences. Here are the slides from class. Your HW is this worksheet, Ex 5B.1 #3ae, 4, 5, 8, 12ceh (make sure to check your answers on the back).

Wednesday, 9/11 - we practiced arithmetic sequence problems. Here are the slides from class. Your HW is the same worksheet as yesterday, Ex 5B.1 #9, 10, 12fg, 13, 14, 16 (make sure to check your answers on the back).

Thursday, 9/12 - we approximated real-world situations with arithmetic sequences. Here are the slides from class. Here is the worksheet we worked on in class, along with your HW at the bottom of the back.

Friday, 9/13 - we reviewed our rules for exponents and scientific notation. Here are the slides from class. Here is the worksheet we used in class, including the HW for tonight which is at the bottom of the back side.

Monday, 9/16 - we reviewed the basics about logarithms and how we can use logarithms, particularly those with base 10 and base e. Here is the worksheet from class, with notes about logarithms and the problems we worked on. You should finish those problems for homework.

Tuesday, 9/17 - we introduced ourselves to geometric sequences and some common problems that helped to remind us about key features of geometric sequences. Here are the slides from class. Here is the worksheet of problems from class, and you should finish for homework. Here are the worked solutions to our problems from class.

Wednesday, 9/18 - we practiced geometric sequence problems. Here are the slides from class. Here are your HW problems.

Thursday, 9/19 - we reviewed sigma notation and spent time using sums of sequences on our GDCs. Here are the slides from class. Here are the HW problems.

Friday, 9/20 - we used efficient formula to find sums of arithmetic sequences, called arithmetic series. Here are the slides from class. Here are the HW problems.

Monday, 9/23 - we used an efficient formula to find the sums of finite geometric sequences, called geometric series. Here are the slides from class. Here is your worksheet for HW.

Tuesday, 9/24 - we practiced using arithmetic and geometric series. Here are the slides from class.

Wednesday, 9/25 - we used class time to try IB problems that could have been on our quiz but we're using them to practice instead. Here are the problems from class. They are not due for HW. Here are the official IB markschemes for those problems, which help you see what work is worth which points, and to see a rough sketch of the solution method.

Thursday, 9/26 - we are starting a new topic (which won't be on your exam tomorrow), on financial math. We started be looking at compound interest. Here are the slides from class. Here is your worksheet for HW, due Wednesday after the long weekend.

Friday, 9/27 - we have our exam on sequences and series. You are allowed a GDC and will have access to the IB formula book (a blank copy that we will provide to you). You will have the whole period.
