Thursday, 9/8 - We did introductions and went through the syllabus together. Here are the slides from our first day together. Here is your HW for tonight:

Navigate to Mr. Lao's website and find the syllabus for our class. (DONE)

Gather your materials for the class

something in which to take notes

something in which to hold class handouts

something with which to take notes

a small stash of graph paper

a GDC ("graphing display calculator")

Complete the handout of 2 IB style problems. I'll check your work and we'll go over it tomorrow.

Friday, 9/9 - We looked at IB style problems and a framework on how to solve problems. Here are the slides from class. Here is your HW worksheet on review of prior knowledge.

Below is the "How to Solve It" framework we used in class, which will be helpful for you to think about throughout your IB math career.

1. Understand the Problem
   • What is the given information?
   • What are you asked to find or show?
   • What are some keywords? Define them.
2. Devise a Plan
   • How are the given info and unknown connected?
   • Which properties or formulas could be useful?
   • What strategies can you use to organize the information? e.g. graphs, diagrams, tables, etc.
3. Carry out the Plan
   • Show all steps of the solution
   • Keep the information organized
   • Have a justification for your steps
4. Review/Extend
   • How can you check your result?
   • What are possible misconceptions? Why?
   • Are there other ways to derive the same result?
