Photography Research Project

This is a photo of my best friend, Rachel. I took this in the cafeteria hallway near the stairs during our lunch period. I originally told her to cover her eyes with her hands as a pose for the photo, but took multiple shots after that pose to see if I liked anything better. This was the product of one of those after photos with a touch of editing. Rachel and I found a good open space for the image and had to make sure the background was a solid white wall. I choose this image out of the ones I took because had the best composition and better lighting than the others. This image is inspired by both of my photographers, Melissa Pinney and Curtis Mann. Pinney is a portrait photographer so I choose to use my friend Rachel as my subject. Mann is an abstract photographer whose color palette is mainly black and white so I choose to make my photo black and white. I liked the balance between the foreground and background. Both are very simple and the subject doesn't take up all of the image and the background isn't too large.

This photo showcases sharp focus because you can clearly see all the detail in Rachel's face along with her hair. The lines in the photo are all in focus and sharp which adds more detail to the image. As I said, this isn't the original pose I was thinking of for this project, but I feel it turned out better than my plan would've. I also was going to keep the photo colored, but when I looked at it in black and white, I ended up liking the way it looked better than when it was colored.

Right before this, we had just gotten out of the PSAT testing and were taking a break in the lunchroom. Everyone seemed really happy and I decided to ask Rachel to pose for me in order to take my photo for the project. After taking this photo she ended up bursting out in laughter. The photo relates to my life because it includes things and people I see everyday. If I could change anything, I would do different locations and maybe multiple or different people and create a series.
