Beautiful Oops

The class had to choose a paper that had an ink spot already on it. Then we were tasked with creating a painting out of the ink and incorporating the ink into the drawing. The original ink spot on my paper is the one with blue in the middle. It had a lot of tinier lines surrounding it from where the ink splashed. The first thing that came to my mind was to make fireworks. I added more in spots myself and made each one a different color. I used acrylic paint to add the color to my painting and ink for the dots. I chose this idea because it was simplistic and something I could transform into my own artwork easily. One element that I used in this painting is space. When adding my other fireworks, I wanted the little lines to take up as much space on the paper as possible. I tried to incorporating contrast and movement into my painting. The bright colors of the fireworks are meant to contrast against the stark, white paper. I wanted the painting to look like the fireworks had just exploded and the sparkles were falling to the ground so I used movement to make it seem like they were spreading out into the air and falling.

The two composition rule that I can see in my painting are informal balance and grouping. Most of the fireworks are towards the right side of the paper. This creates informal balance because on side of the paper is more empty than the other. Most of the ink spots are grouped near each other in the lower right hand corner. The first thing I did on this painting was paint over the tiny, black lines of in on the paper. After that I saw fireworks and knew I wanted to do that. Then I added more ink spots and more colors to the paper as I went along. At the end I put a colored spot inside the spot of ink that matched the color of the lines around it.

My boyfriend and I had recently gone to Old Orchard beach and got to see fireworks at night. The ink reminded me of that night so I was inspired to create fireworks out of the spots. Fireworks are my favorite thing to watch especially at a fair. THe one thing I would do differently would be to add more fireworks with some overlapping and more colors in order to make the painting more interesting.
